Patterns are a variation that comes with the American version of bingo. This is the version that is played on a five number by five number square grid that is based on seventy-five numbers. This square nature of the grid allows for many different patterns to be played for, in addition to the regular bingo patterns of a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line, and sometime the four corners, depending on the house rules.
Patterns can be any kind of number, letter or shape that is designed on the square grid. The players then must make this pattern from the numbers called by the bingo caller. Some players like the UK bingo patterned games; other do not like the patterns. The people that like the patterns like the variety.
The patterns results in a player that must be alert to the shape of the pattern and which of the called number to cover. Some people solve this by covering all of the number that are called and then looking for the shape of the desired pattern. Others define the pattern and then only cover the numbers that are a part of the pattern. Either way that works for the player is okay. Most of the players that don't like patterns don't like it because of the confusion and the extra work it takes to define the pattern. The nice thing about the pattern game is that it does add a little variety into the humdrum of vertical, diagonal, horizontal and four corners. Patterns are usually the object of special games at land-based bingo halls. |
